Deep Reflections | Houston Methodist, The Woodlands Hospital Commission

In early 2021, the artist began talking to art consultants at Skyline Art in Houston, TX about several potential wall-mounted glass commissions for a hospital outside of Charlotte, NC and another outside of Houston.

After months of back and forth (budgets, ideas, sketches, etc.) both clients were ready to contract Ms. Jarvi. Anyone who’s worked on commissions (from the side of artist, client, consultant, or fabricator) knows this is the nature of construction and the commissioning process.

The fun part is juggling deadlines with all the moving parts. This meant she was creating three large wall-mounted glass commissions within about a six month period. It worked out well because the artist had spent the previous year retooling her kiln glass studio in Charlotte, NC to accommodate multiple large projects, simultaneously.

[The LORD was also very gracious in that all the glass and supplies needed were available… and everything went off with only minor hitches. There’s always something unexpected in commissions.]

Jarvi was able to order all the Bullseye Glass from her NC distributor, Warm Glass. And, Brad Walker (co-owner of Warm Glass) actually pre-cut a number of sheet glass circles for all three commissions.

Poppy Mussallem, Hang Your Glass founder, also had all the hardware needed for three projects available!

Carmella Jarvi only uses Bullseye Glass, made in Portland OR, and Hang Your Glass, out of CA, for her wall mounted glass commissions. Both products are the highest quality and give the clients a very clean look and smooth installation of their bespoke pieces.

Five of the twenty five glass rounds in final Deep Reflections piece… shot by the incredible Mitchell Kearney Photography in his Charlotte studio for the artist. These were designed to key off the interior design color/texture palettes for the addition to Houston Methodist, The Woodlands Hospital.

Additionally, Jarvi played with abstract nods to water and nature… whether drops of water, planets, cells, or even a butterfly might be spotted.

Here is the complete commission installed on the 3rd floor. The title, Deep Reflections, is meant to capture an experience with the wide variety of details one can lose themselves in. The water connection is universal. Regardless your age, language, or other background, this piece invites calm, contemplation, maybe stirs fond memories… or a moment of reprieve.
